Q&A: Sound diffusion
What is the difference between an acoustic absorber and a diffuser?
It’s simple to understand the difference between the two, which form the perfect acoustic duo:
Absorbers take in sound energy when sound waves hit them, transforming it into heat. The result is better control of the reverberation time, as well as a reduction of echoes, reflections, and coloration.
Diffusers, in contrast, contribute to a better sound by causing sound energy to be scattered in many directions. Their irregular, sophisticated shapes divert sound waves at a variety of angles, giving your listening environment a desirable sense of spaciousness and liveliness while maintaining sound energy within the room.
Why do I need diffusers if I already have absorbers?
The installation of absorbers should be your first step, but to get a truly balanced and immersive sound, you need both. Absorbers manage echo and decay time, while diffusers ensure a nice, large sound without "killing the liveliness" of the room. This combination is a must for high-end audio and music studios.
Where is the best place to install diffusers?
Strategic placement is key to effective diffusion:
On the Rear Wall: This is the standard placement in most music studios, listening rooms, and home theaters. The idea is to place your listening position far enough from the rear wall (at least 2 meters) to allow the scattered sound energy to be evenly distributed, ensuring the best acoustic experience.
On the Side Walls: Installing diffusers in addition to absorbers on the first reflection points will preserve more liveliness in your high-end listening room. Make sure the first reflection points are covered so sound energy is not reflected by the flat walls directly at the listening position.
On the Front Wall: This is for the audiophile looking for maximum spaciness. Covering two opposite walls with diffuser arrays creates an effect of "endless space" as sound energy is scarcely reflected by a flat surface.

How many diffusers do I need in my room?
A single diffuser must be at least a few meters wide to make a difference. Generally speaking, diffusion is most effective if five or more acoustic diffusers are put next to each other in an array.
The reason for this is simple: the greater the number of periods (diffusers next to each other), the more evenly sound energy gets distributed, which is what acoustic diffusion is all about. That said, if your diffusion panel array is less than one meter wide, you will probably not hear much of a difference.
Should I always use diffusers?
We only recommend placing diffusers on the back wall if there’s at least 2 meters of space between the rear wall and the listening position. If there isn’t, sound energy will not spread evenly prior to reaching your ears. In smaller rooms, it’s often more advisable to focus on taming the low frequencies and flutter echoes instead.
